Dare to Tell the Truth: Sloane Howell Edition

Dare to Tell the Truth with Kayla the Bibliophile, aka author KD Robichaux

Sloane Howell Edition

What would you say is the most embarrassing thing you have done or had done to you?

Umm, where to start. It’s hard to pick one moment and I don’t embarrass very easily. I usually just go with the moment. But my son locked me out of the house one day when he was about two or three, and I freaked out. I went to take out the trash and didn’t have my keys, my wife was at work. I contemplated breaking out a window, but he was following me to every room and laughing at me, and I didn’t want glass shards to cut him in the face from hurling a rock through a window. I couldn’t kick down the door because what if he’s on the other side of it?

So finally, I got an idea, and I went halfway through our dog door, while he laughed. I’m not super small and it’s definitely not a human door, because it’s made for dogs. It was seriously like a book moment, I may write it someday. So halfway through the dog door I get stuck and I’m not sure I can get through or get out. At the same time, I notice a pair of scissors on the counter, and I’m like, “oh god, what the hell?” I try to look away but it’s like toddlers can sense fear and anxiety. He walks over to them. I start fighting my big ass off to get through the door, cursing myself for not running more, praying to god. I finally contort around to where I can reach the handle and unlock the back door. Then I can pull myself right back out. The dead bolt is locked. He’s closing in on those scissors like a heat-seeking missile, just laughing. I strain and get the dead bolt unlocked. It hurt like hell. My ribs were all scraped up. I finally get my hips through and unlock it and when I come back down, I slide through the door. So I unlocked it for no reason. I sprinted to the counter just before he could grab the scissors, and then I nearly went into cardiac arrest.

Craziest Fan moment?

I had a fan break down in tears once and she was like fully catatonic, in the middle of an event. I didn’t know what to do. It was so sweet and I didn’t like that she was so stricken in front of me, it had to be terrifying for her. So I just walked around and hugged her, for probably a minute or two. Then I talked to her for about fifteen minutes until she was finally smiling and opening up a little more. She wasn’t crazy, but it was crazy to me, because I’ve never really impacted someone like that before.

Not get dead.

So tell us something nobody knows about you.

I am not musically talented at all. And I wish I was. All I’m good for is listening to it.

What did you think while reading these questions?

They were very interesting. 😊

Now, for some pimping.

Tell us all about your books!

Oh, man. I could do this all day, but I’ll spare the audience, and just say that I write a little of everything. I have several pen names. Sloane Howell writes mostly romance. Some of it darker and with action and suspense, some romcom. It really depends on what I’m inspired to write at that time. My newest release, Bad Dad, is a romance/suspense/action/MMA/military/single dad. It really is kind of a mashup of a lot of different things.

I worked really hard on this book to get it just right. I’d never written a dad hero before, and I really wanted to nail it and include all the struggles I’ve faced being a father. It’s a job I take very seriously, being a dad.

When to let go. When you’re being too protective. Releasing your child out into society. Letting them face the world. I thought those were things other people could relate to, and that’s what a story is, essentially. The good ones for me, anyway. When it takes you to another place and on an adventure, but at the same time you can relate to the emotions of the characters, and the struggles they face. So that’s what I tried to do. Hopefully, it worked.

It takes one hell of a book to beat my squirrel brain, and this one did it from page one. Bad Dad was my first Sloane Howell book, and it most certainly will not be my last. He has gained a fan for life, because gah-dayum. That man can freakin' WRITE!
